Personally, I was devastated by the recent robbery at The Northern — they did so great with their Kickstarter, and some idiot had to come and wash it all away. My favorite recent Olympia band is Weird TV.
I thought Tim from Rancid used to date Kathleen hanna or maybe it was. Tobi Vail who dated Kurt Cobain. Shit, I sound like I’m reporting for. Entertainment.
Back in the fall of , when Nirvana only had one album to their credit and were only beginning to make a name for themselves on the Washington state music scene, Kurt Cobain was dating a woman named Tobi Vail. She was the drummer for one of the original “riot grrrl” bands, Bikini Kill. They were a loud and vigorous punk rock group that could work up quite a sweat with their agenda to reshape the world.
One night after getting together to paint the outside of a pro-life pregnancy clinic with protest messages, Kurt and Bikini Kill’s lead singer and songwriter, Kathleen Hanna, were hanging out in his motel room, talking about things like anarchy, punk rock, and politics. At the time, he took it to be a visionary statement. So powerful, in fact, that it inspired the lyrics to a song that he would eventually create and include on Nirvana’s next album, Nevermind.
It was only later that he learned that Kathleen was merely commenting on how the aroma of her bandmate Tobi’s favorite deodorant, a Mennen brand called Teen Spirit, left a detectable trace on Kurt.

Musically, the band was vibrant, and the set was tight. The driving rhythm of Wilcox and Vail working in tandem held down the faster songs while loping ably through slower numbers. One oft-overlooked aspect of Bikini Kill is their ability to change up instruments, and they did throughout the night, with Hanna taking over on bass while Vail helmed the microphone, and both Lyle and Wilcox showing their chops on the drums.
Bikini Kill were of course on the forefront of the Riot Grrrl movement, and there were women young and old in the audience singing along fervently. Hanna still has her finger on the pulse of the world, however. In a funny but poignant moment, she noted how these days we may wake up wanting to chant rise above! Bikini Kill were supported on this date by Sammus , who kickstarted the night singing and rapping her soul-baring lyrics over rolling rhythms.
The Ithaca-based artist was clearly moved by the opportunity, and the audience seemed to appreciate the set. Billy Boredom and Kathi Wilcox. Bikini Kill is credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early ’90s via their political lyrics, zines and confrontational live shows. After the split they put out ‘The Singles‘ collection in , but their most recent release was the reissue of EP ‘Revolution Girl Style Now’ in The band began touring in June , and touched down all over the world including the US several times, Europe, Australia and Japan.
They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music, put on shows and made fanzines. This independent media making and informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard.
Bikini Kill have announced their first live date in the UK for over 23 years. The group, made up of singer Kathleen Hanna, drummer Tobi Vail.
The recorded legacy of Nirvana is ungodly small—three studio albums, the first of which cost six hundred and six dollars and seventeen cents to make, plus one miscellany and two posthumously released live CDs. Given the exploitations that might well have ensued after Kurt Cobain killed himself in April of , we should be grateful that the band’s catalogue hasn’t been stuffed with one of those four-CD boxes of redundant concert tapes which now diminish Jimi Hendrix, the Monkees, and the Doors.
This exercise of discretion has been good for the band’s image, and for our fond memories. There the six titles are on the shelf. Each sounds different from the others, and each sounds at least as vital today as it did when Nirvana was a historical force rather than a historical anomaly. Taken as a unit, Nirvana’s albums are living proof of the subtlety and variety of what conventional musicology still regards as a crude, undeveloped genre.
But they worked hard and long before that. Cross dates the band’s first gig to a March, , houseparty in Raymond, Washington, a nowhere logging town thirty minutes south of Aberdeen, the nowhere logging home town of the then twenty-year-old Cobain. While this structure inevitably shortchanges the achievement of Nirvana itself, it’s a crucial source of the book’s considerable power. Cross asserts his compulsion to ask “questions concerning spirituality, the role of madness in artistic genius, the ravages of drug abuse on a soul”; the drug details are especially wrenching.
But what emerges far more emphatically is the life story of someone who never grew up, someone whose maturation was half done before he was twenty-one, someone who extracted art from a perpetual adolescence that was over much too soon. Many American kids have it worse than Kurt Cobain, and quite a few survive just fine.
His family was never fully middle-class, never deep poor.
